Genesis 1:27, Amplified Bible
“So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
“As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.” (Acts 5:15, NIV)
People have asked me what it means to carry the image of God. Does it mean it will be like Peter’s shadow, or that we will experience miraculous healing, or there will be spiritual signs and wonders, or that we will see the power of God in our lives? I have experienced many Christians who chase after those who claim to be prophets or posses strong spiritual gifts, thinking that it is a way to see God and draw closer to Jesus…
But is all that true? I want to make a clear statement about this…
The true reflection of Jesus is not seen through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. Instead, it is in the humbleness of Christ Himself.
Jesus said, “learn from Me, for I AM gentle and humble in heart”. (Matthew 11:29) Paul also told us, “…love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8, NIV) Even if someone can speak in tongues of men and angels, even if they have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and have all knowledge, even if they have faith that can move mountains, if they do not have the love that Jesus demonstrated, the love that led Him to make Himself nothing, and put on human likeness, then just like those sorcerers who turned their staffs to snakes in Egypt, they do not represent Christ our Lord. We need to be aware of what the Word of God warned us, “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.” (Matthew 24:24, BSB)
In a funeral, a pastor held a rose in his hand. He began to remove its petals one by one and crush the rest completely, sprinkling the pieces on the ground. Then he held up his hands and smelt them, saying, “The rose has been crushed, but the fragrance is still on my hands.”
“For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.” (2 Corinthians 2:15-17, NIV)
Our life journey on earth may seem difficult and we may make mistakes. However, if we are the true image bearers of Christ then the same forgiveness and love that He demonstrated on the cross can be recognized in our own life as well. Be Christ’s image bearer, my dear friends.
