The devil is like Roaring Lion; a toy, stuffed, lion
1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
Let’s take a look at some of the key words in this verse.
#1 Adversary: against, against the law; accuser; to cause you to go against or fault the law.
In other words the devil tries to get us to go against the Word of God. The devil tries to get us to question the Word of God: “Has God indeed said.” Genesis 3:1 NKJV “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
Has God indeed said: “By His stripes you were healed?”
Has God indeed said: “My God shall supply all your need?”
Has God indeed said: “Jesus carried our sickness and our pains in His own body?”
The devil wants to separate you from the Word of God, from God Himself. He wants you to look at your circumstances and doubt the Word of God. If he can get you to doubt God’s Word and sin, then he has accomplished just that, he gets you separated from God.
Isaiah 59:2 NKJV “But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.”
#2 Devil: falsely accuses or divides; divides the people; accuser; slanderer.
The main function of the devil is to divide people. He wants to separate us from each other and from Jesus. We see this every time we go on the internet. We see those who call themselves Christians bad mouthing other believers and ministers on the internet. They play right into the hands of satan. We see this in group settings in church and in meetings outside of church. Do you know that there have been church splits over the type of carpet to buy?
2 Corinthians 2:10-11 NKJV “Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.
We are not ignorant of how the devil works. He wants to get us angry, get us offended, to divide us and get us in unforgiveness. This is why satan attacks Christian marriages. A husband and wife who follow Jesus and pray in agreement have the ‘Power of Heaven’ at their disposal.
The best way to beat the devil at his game is to readily forgive everyone who hurts you in any way. Jesus completely defeated the devil by forgiving us! His shed Blood on the cross forgave our sins!
If you do not forgive others your prayers will not be answered and the devil wins.
Mark 11:25-26 NKJV “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Jesus defeated the devil by forgiving us. We defeat the devil by for giving others.
Colossians 2:11-15 NKJV “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
Jesus totally defeated and disarmed the devil and every demon by forgiving us. He made a public spectacle of their defeat in the spirit realm.
back to: 1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
#3 Sober: to watch. We are to keep a watchful eye out for the activities of the devil.
#4 vigilant: to be awake, to watch.
Be awake, don’t be fooled by the activities and lies of the devil. We need to be on our toes always; and not let the devil in.
#5 as or like: about. Like;
The devil is pretending to be a lion. But we actually have the Lion of Judah on the inside of us. He has overcome the world and the devil.
We know what the devil is up to and we have authority over him.
John 16:33 NKJV “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
The Kingdom of God resides in us! Luke 17:20 NKJV “Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
Christ in you is the Kingdom of God in you.
Colossians 1:27 NKJV “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
The word Christ means: the Anointed One, with the anointing which is the burden removing, yoke destroying Power of God.
The Kingdom of God, the Christ, is in us, as believers. It does not come with observation (Luke 17:20 above). You must participate with the Kingdom.
“How do I participate with the Kingdom of God,” Pastor Glenn? It is actually quite simple. If there is a Kingdom then there must be a King. If there is a King then He makes all the rules. If He makes all the rules, then we simply are to obey them. We make the choice to obey the Word of God. When we place ourselves under the authority of God/Jesus then He gives us His authority to use.
Luke 10:19 NKJV “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Mark 16:19-20 NKJV “So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.
When the Lord works with you, you lay hands on the sick and they are healed and you have the power to cast out devils.
Mark 16:17-18 NKJV 17 “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Let’s go back and take another look at 1 Peter 5:8-9 again.
Remember our definitions above “as” or “like,” the devil is pretending to be a roaring lion. He can only devour us if we yield to his lies. Notice, a stuffed lion is like a roaring lion. Just like a stuffed teddy bear is like a bear. All the devil has is lies and deception. He can’t do anything to you unless you believe the lie. A stuffed lion has no teeth, it cannot bite, it is not alive, it has no power unless you give it power.
John 8:44 NKJV “…When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
The devil lied to Adam and Eve and got them to eat of the forbidden fruit. It is the same today. He lies to you, to get you to go against the Word of God. He tempts you to believe his lie to get you to reject the Word of God.
Example: the devil will tell an older believer that they are sick because they are old and they cannot be healed. But! There are no exceptions in “By His Stripes You were Healed!” This verse is not age related! It doesn’t say you can’t be healed because you are old.
Isaiah 46:4 NKJV “Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
One time when I was preaching in a foreign country. We went to the house of a friend of the pastor after the service. The elderly grandparents were sick, crippled. One was riddled with arthritis. We prayed for them and Jesus healed them instantly. An older uncle was sick, Jesus healed him. Two other individuals received Salvation. Everyone repented of their sins. The Bible tells us that we will get old but we do not have to be sick and old. When we left that house we said: “The Kingdom of God has visited you this evening.”
The Kingdom of God is within YOU! But you must participate with it! They devil is a toothless, stuffed, toy lion pretending to be a roaring lion. Do not listen to his lies!
Remember if you believe the lies of the devil then you are automatically assuming that GOD is lying, that GOD doesn’t know what He’s talking about.
We are to resist the devil. “How do I do that pastor Glenn?” The verse tells us: “steadfast in the faith.” The word faith means to believe in, trust in and obey the Word of God. I simply make the choice to obey the Word of God.
We are not to buy into the devil’s lies. We are to put the Word of God in our mouths and go after the devil. Bind him, cast him out, command that our bodies, situations, circumstances line up with the Word of God. When Jesus walked on the earth He defeated the devil every time with: “it is written!” He put the Word of God in His mouth!!! We are to do the same thing.
If you need to repent for any reason; (uproot the seeds of sin that you have sown): turn from your sin, disobedience to the Word of God, and turn back to God, and make the choice to obey His Word; then ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus, do it! Forgive everyone who has ever harmed you; forgive yourself for the hurt that you have done to others and to the heart of God.
