THREE WAYS OF CHASING THE SHADOW OF THE WORLD INSTEAD OF JESUS CHRIST, Culled From Dipo Toby Alakija Illustrative Sermon Book Titled: “The Two Routes To Eternal Destination.
My friend was not particularly pleased to see me because he has the impression that I was a religious fanatic. However, he could not turn me away because he has agreed to listen to what I’ve got to say. He was my mate in school and a rich man too. His single problem was that his riches have gotten into his head.
“As you are aware,” he told me just as I was ushered into his luxurious office, “I have no time to burn. So I will appreciate it if you go right straight to the point.”
“If death knocks at the door of your office, you wont be too busy to die,” I replied, sitting in front of him. “Would you?”
“I’m healthy and too young to die, you know.”
I smiled courteously. “I had that thought sometimes ago,” I told him in a very polite way. I have learnt to be very polite whenever I am about to point out hideous facts. “But I got a better idea when I visited the mortuary. I’ve seen countless dead bodies in life and I have even found out the causes of some deaths. My conclusion was that death has no respect for age, sex, status, health or whatever. Anybody can die at anytime and at anywhere and can be killed by anything. You remember a few of our friends who have promising careers in those days but, as you know, they are now in the grave. We’ve got only one chance to live and only today to think of. You can have all the pleasures you want in this world but what happens when you die? As a matter of fact, I’m here to warn you of what lies ahead of you if you die without Jesus Christ in your life. Think of it, my friend. Jesus asked everyone (as in Mark 8:36), “what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lose his own soul?” If you gain the whole wide world and lose your soul, you will go to hell. But if you lose the pleasure of the world for the sake of Christ, you will go to heaven.”
I leaned over to him and continued in a whisper, “If you miss that place called heaven, you will cry in agony. I will not be there to hear you cry and gnash you teeth. But if you become born-again like me and endure all sorts of names I’ve had to endure, we’ll laugh together in heaven where there is no pain or sorrow.” I leaned backward again and smiled at him as he looked thoughtful. “No matter how much you have acquired in this world, you won’t take anything with you when you die, would you? Somebody else will have to inherit all you have worked so hard to acquire.”
In a very gentle voice, I asked him the question that means a lot to mankind. “Do you want to be born-again and go to heaven when you depart from this world? Or you want to live in sin and die again in hell? The choice is yours to make. I have delivered the message God has for you. Your blood is cleared off my neck.”
There was a long uncomfortable silence. Then he said with sober reflection, “I don’t know you’re best friend until now.”
I smiled wearily. At least, he heard me. “Do you want us to pray now? I have other people to see.”
We prayed together. The following Sunday, I saw him in the Church.
The three ways people chase the shadow instead of Jesus Christ are as follows:
1. Seeking Material Things Instead Of The Kingdom Of God: Jesus said in Matthew 6:32-33, “For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness and all these things (which you need) shall be added unto you.”
2. Trading Salvation For Financial Freedom Or Other Liberties: The Bible says in Psalm 49:8-9, “For the redemption of their soul is costly (it cost Jesus His precious blood to redeem soul of a person)… (so) that he should still live forever, and not see corruption.”
3. Neglecting Instead Of Accepting Jesus Christ At Young Age: The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 12:1, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them.’ ”
I pray that no one reading this message will trade salvation for materialism in Jesus’ name.
